CPC Students at the GTB Autism Seminar

Students of the Certified Professional Child-Caregiver Program were in attendance at the annual Autism Week organised by Guarantee Trust bank.

The week long event event which kicked off on Monday with a seminar, attracts a range of experts and stakeholders in the field for the purpose of better understanding how best to relate with and cater for those living with the disorder.

It was an opportunity for the students to learn more about the disorder so as to enable them be more knowledgeable caregivers of children with different needs as the case may be. Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behaviour.

This simply means that those with the disorder which is usually present from early childhood have great difficulty in communicating and forming relationship with other people; also, in using language and abstract concepts.

Now every child needs special care, some more than others. That is simply the case with an autistic child.

As a child-caregiver, one needs to understand the different needs of a child and respond effectively.

Here are some pictures from the event;

Education empowers!

We see this over and over again in the testimonies of some of our nannies who go from barely having enough to living comfortable lives – and in some cases, moving on to start their own businesses- through the income they make from caring for children.

Well here’s another opportunity to be empowered by training as a child-caregiver or getting one trained.

We cannot over-stress the importance of having the right skills. Don’t cut corners when dealing with something as precious as a child’s well-being.

Nanny gets a job in Canada after CPC program!

We are so delighted to share this testimony from one of our 2015 Certified Professional Child-Caregiver (CPC)’s student.

This is what she has to say:
“My six months journey at The Nanny Academy was awesome! The rich program gave me a better and in-depth understanding of what childcare is all about.

At first, the six months seemed like forever but when I started the CPC (Certified Professional Childcare giver) classes, I realized that it was worth the wait. The CPC program is rich!

The Founder of the school Mrs Amara Agbim is super supportive and encouraging, as well as her team! Thanks to all my lovely classmates, you all rock!

Grateful to my mum and Dad for the support and encouragement during my studies!

I strongly recommend Nanny Academy!”

So do we!

We are proud to announce that Nanny A (name withheld) just got her work permit to start working in Canada. Our certificate program qualified her for the job!

More grease to you elbow dear nanny!

Nanny Academy’s Students get creative!

Creative Art Class

It is no secret that art is a great way for children to develop mentally, socially, and emotionally which is why parents and childcare givers should encourage children to express themselves with paints, drawing and different other creative activity.

For this reason, students at The Nanny Academy got their hands busy creating self portraits during their Creative Art Class on Monday.

This is a great activity that can be done with children not just to have fun but to teach them some basic lessons and also to encourage expression of their talents.

5 tips to encourage children wash their hands

Wash hands

Washing hands is a basic hygiene skill for kids. The earlier a child learns to properly wash his hands, the greater defense he has against germs that may cause illness. Now while adults know the importance of hygiene, children don’t. They often forget to wash their hands after using the toilet and this is a direct call on infections if they eat with that dirty hand. This is why we have to encourage them to wash their hands after using the toilet.

Here are some of the things you can do as a nanny to ensure that children wash their hands always:

1. Make the sink accessible to them
The sink might be higher up and they might not be able to reach it, you can build a step or place a bowl on the floor and instruct them to wash their hand in it.

2. Constantly remind them
Kids can run out the toilet ready to get back to their food or play so you have to remind them constantly while they are in there. And with time they will always remember.

3. Make up a song
Make up a song that’ll talk about hygiene and why it’s good that they clean up always. The song is what they’ll remember even when you are not around them to clean up after using the toilet.

4. Let them make bubbles
While they are washing, encourage them to make bubbles with the soap, this will keep them longer at the sink so they can wash thoroughly and trust them to always want to wash their hands because playing with bubbles is fun.

5. Explain the importance of good hygiene to them
Sometimes all you need is explain things to your kids and they’ll get a better view of it. Tell them that not washing their hands properly can make them sick. This might motivate them to spend a good 2 minutes running the tap and washing their hands.
